The Pearl River Tower is one of the first of a new generation of super smart buildings. It will use less than half the energy of a conventional skyscraper and will harvest the forces of nature to make energy of its own. With a curved facade that faces directly into the wind, the Pearl River Tower in China’s Guangzhou City is shaped for performance. It’s the first ever building to combine structure with aerodynamics and the first to utilize a multitude of energy efficient technologies in one single structure. With a design specific to its environment, the Pearl River Tower symbolizes the future for super-tall building design. 

 

The Tower is made of steel connected with nut and bolts to withstand earthquate. The Tower Generates its own power and thus its was the Holy Ground for Mechanical Engineers during Construction.

Want to be Registered as a Professional Engineer?
Subject to the provisions of the Engineers Act, a person shall be eligible for registration under this Act as a proffessional engineer if:

• Is registered as a graduate engineer and has obtained not less than three years practical experience in design and project supervision
• Has passed professional assessment examination conducted by the Board
• Is a corporate member of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya

A person eligible to be registered as a professional engineer as outlined above may apply to the Registrar, in a prescribed form and on payment of prescribed fee of Ksh.1500, to be registered under the Engineers Act. A fee of Ksh.1500 is payable annually directly to EBK
An application made to the registrar shall be accompanied with certified copies of certificates and other documents highlighting such engineering input in a number of projects as would demonstrate to the Board the applicants ability to be a proffessional engineer

World's Tallest Tent!

Designed by the British architects Foster & Partners, the Khan Shatyr Entertainment Centre in the capital Astana is 150m (490ft) high. The centre has a huge indoor leisure park, designed to be protected from the region's harsh climate. Standing on a 200m concrete base, Khan Shatyr is the city's highest structure and the world's tallest tent. Inside, visitors will find shops, restaurants and cinemas - even an artificial beach and a running track.

Features of the Tent.

The tent is made from three layers of ETFE, a special see-through plastic that allows daylight to wash the interiors while sheltering them from weather extremes

Air is pumped in between the layers inflating them into enormous pillows, giving the tent covering the appearance of a large quilt

The aim is to provide the city with a range of civic, cultural and social amenities sheltered all year round, whatever the weather

In winter, a key challenge is to prevent the formation of ice on the inside of the tent using temperature control and directing warm air currents up the inner fabric surface.
